It happens that plans don't always work out in life. Everything is subject to change, and although it may appear improbable that things will improve, remember that there are people who are experiencing similar circumstances, and try not to become pessimistic. Since we are all human, I hope that by telling my stories, I will uplift you and bring some wisdom, humor, and light into your life.

Living in South Korea as a woman comes with intense pressure, especially when it comes to weight. If you’re a U.S. medium and already struggling with self-esteem, moving here might not be the best idea — unless you’re prepared for your confidence to take a serious hit.

I’ve battled with weight fluctuations for years, partly because I genuinely love food. That constant tug-of-war between indulging and restricting has been exhausting. And in Korea, where the beauty standard often demands women to maintain an impossibly low weight — we’re talking 45 to 50 kg — the struggle becomes even more brutal.

Trying to conform to that standard at 39 feels like chasing a mirage. It’s not just about appearance; it’s about how society makes you feel if you don’t fit the mold. And let me tell you — the pressure is very, very real.

Unfortunately, stress and emotional eating have completely derailed my diet and exercise routine over the past three months — and just like that, I’ve gained 8 kg back. I’ll admit it: like many people, I use food to numb emotional discomfort.

Despite my efforts to stay consistent at the gym, it only takes a few months of slipping to feel the weight creeping back on — and with it, the regret over every indulgent choice.

Korea certainly doesn’t make it easier. With countless restaurants on every corner, effortless access to takeout, a vibrant nightlife, and alcohol available 24/7, temptation is constant. It’s a perfect storm for anyone trying to stay disciplined and lately, I’ve been swept right into it.

Losing weight isn’t always as simple as “eat less, move more.” There are so many factors that can make it challenging, from genetics and hormonal imbalances to unhealthy eating patterns, lack of exercise, medical issues, and emotional or stress-related eating. Sustainable weight loss usually takes a thoughtful mix of balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and, most importantly, consistency over time.
